What If Chief Compass Had Said Yes?

A Decision by the New Orleans Police Chief

May Have Cost Lives

     By Marc Madow
Only three months ago an event happened in New Orleans which attracted little national attention. Today, the dominant media is exposing the horrific results of flood control project funding which was diverted to support America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stories of thugs looting and shooting in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans are now front page news. Good people everywhere are asking how people could do these things to their fellow citizens. Part of the answer lies in the fact that New Orleans already had already become a war-zone of violence between its community and law enforcement.

Three months ago a solution had been proposed by Dennis Muhammad, CEO of ENOTA (Educating Neighborhoods to Obey Those in Authority). Initially, the program had been accepted by the Chief of Police, Eddie Compass, who announced the initiative during an interview with a local news station. An immediate attack by two prominent religious leaders and the local police association upon the integrity of the program and those who would administer it succeeded in making Chief Compass back out of his agreement with Mr. Muhammad. The citizens of New Orleans were denied an excellent chance to resolve a deadly problem.
An important question today which begs to be asked is how differently might the citizens of New Orleans behaved had Chief Compass said “yes” to Mr. Muhammad’s program? How many less dead folks? How many less cops not abandoning their uniforms? How much less embarrassment for America in the eyes of the world’s citizens? We’ll never know for sure.

The original article about how Chief Compass was pressured to change his position appears in the Final Call News.
